Why Asian Arowana is expensive?

I have done this article long time ago for another forum I was actively in. Doing some "clean up" on my computer recently...I thought I take it out and share it here. It just a general description, as I am not looking into reading up hundreds of pages book.May it serves as food for thought for some. Perhaps some other will like to join in and put in more thoughts. Enjoy!
============================== ============================

The Asian Arowana Scleropages formosus is considered one of the most expensive freshwater fish in the world. With its brightly colored scales and barbells at the tip of its mouth, it is also known as the Dragon Fish, or sometimes referred as the Asian bonytongue. It is also believed by many as a recreation of the mysticism Dragon, a powerful protector against evil. It has a significance value especially in the Chinese culture. Not only that but they are considered to be “lucky” fish. I have also often heard belief that these magnificent fish could keep its owner from danger by sometimes dying itself. It is believed to be used as a fengshui fish too.

One reason why Asian Arowanas are expensive is because they are endangered. They are framed and sold under license in places where it is legal to sell them. Lots of Asian people, especially businesspeople believe these dragon fishes bring them good luck and fortune.

Another reason will be reproduction. Asian Arowanas are difficult to breed in captivity. They need large outdoor ponds, although successful spawning had been recorded in aquaria. Not to forget that they slow in maturity too.

The increasing scarcity of this fish is another factor in its price tag. Demand is higher than the supply rate. They are now less seen in the habitats of the Malay Peninsula, where they were once widely distributed. In Singapore, all Asian Arowanas for sale have to be electronically tagged and certified, since it is an endangered species. Arowana is most prized in the following order; red, gold, and then sliver color.

This popularity has led to extensive illicit trade. For example, captive-bred fish may be traded if specimens are tagged with a glass-covered microchip inserted under the skin that can be read by a scanner. Proper CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna) permits and a certificate with the microchip number must also accompany each fish. Asian Arowanas is still banned in certain countries like the United States. It cannot be possessed in that country without a permit.

Guide to Buying and Keeping SuperArowana (Dragon Fish)

Beginner's Guide to Buying and Keeping Asian Arowana (Dragon Fish) as a Hobby

(by Mr Nicolas Chia Poh Siong)

Dragon Fish Varieties
The Dragon Fish varieties are as follows:-

Green It is the cheapest in price among the variety of Dragon Fish as the demand is low due to unattractive colourisation exhibited when in adulthood (2-3 yrs of age).
Yellow Tail This is commonly sold as grade 1.5 Red which in classifying "Red", it is much appealing to most hobbyists and thus, enhances the sales.
Indonesian Golden (RTG) It is commonly known as Red Tail Gold (RTG). It can be further classified into Normal RTG and High Back RTG. The prior exhibit a gold colourisation up to the fourth while the latter has it gold colourisation rise to the fifth scale level and sometimes, gold speckles on the sixth scale level when in adulthood. High Back RTG usually commands a higher price than the Normal RTG.
Malaysian Golden It is also known as Crossback Golden. It exhibit a gold colourisation up to sixth and highest scale level and "cross over the back" of the Dragon Fish. This engulfment of gold over the body is portrait by many as the Emperor Robe. Hence, Malaysian Golden is highly priced.
Red It can be further classified into Orange Red, Chili Red and Blood Red. However, this classification of Red can only be done when the Dragon Fish is in adulthood. The young ones are all known as Super Red. This is the most sort after variety as red signify Wealth, Health and Good Luck.
Cross-breed Usually sold as genuine grade fish after colour-enhancing. The commonly found variety of such is RTG/Green, RTG/1.5Red, Red/1.5Red, Red/RTG, Crossback/Green, Crossback/Red and Crossback/RTG.
Axanthic and Albino These are the genetically mutated Dragon Fish which exhibit two prominent colour pigment. The prior has black eyes and white body and the latter has red eyes and white body. They are very rare and sort after by Dragoon Fish collectors. Usually only a few pieces in a year and hence, command a premium price.

Accelerate crossing back rings (6th level rings)

In my experience :
1. Use light /whitish coloured gravel/ bottom
2. Do not put lamp on top of the tank , instead put lamp on the bottom of it.
3. tanning , tanning and more tanning

In theory , to adapt camouflage, the fish will follow the colour of the river to cover it's appearance ,so most of them will get it's back's rings dark coloured , even when they were adult size crossback SR will have their back's ring darker core than the rest 5 level rings.
Try to manipulate the bottom colour to accelerate crossback process, remember Bloodred are faster in crossing back rings than Chili Red

Arowana Colour Boosting

Sharing experience for colour boosting , based on my C@be (N1wan's ChiliRed)

1. Tanning method

a. Sunray , since 7.30am to 11.00am the tank will be exposed to sunray
bath at angled direction

b. At 11.00am to 20.00pm tanning held by 1 @30W 16.000K TL light
(submerged underwater) at just below water level and 1 @20W 16.000K
TL and 1@ 20W Actnic Blue 22.000K TL . , The light tube will replaced
every 4 months

2. Water management
: pH level set at 6.3 and gH level at 8.0-9.0 , salinity
low , pH level managed decreasing with blackwater , increasing with
water changing ( my arthesis water are pH 7.6, stabil with good buffering
capacity level) Oxygen level managed by aerator pump and sprayed
water from canister output, O3 treatment 1hour every day to keep
sterilize the tank.

Blackwater treatment : every 3days ,tank's water changed 30% and
treated with blackwater extract to be pH6.3 . gH is lowered using ion
exchange resin filtration for new water change (not on the tank).
Normally i used 3 bottle @500ml Tetra Blackwater extract every 2
months .

3. Feeding and Diet :

Feeded only with crickets , prawns and bamboo worms , diet will be
feeded on balance (all 3 types of them in a day) and feeding times is
every 4 hours start at 8.00am , 12am, 16.00pm and last at 20.00pm,
always never feeded full in one feeding time except for last feeding .

4. Filtration :

2 @ 1500l/h canister filter using bio filtration media , to keep the water
balance in biological recycle , the filter is perfectly balanced already and
i'm using gravel bed with undergravel pad for intake to canister

HOW TO SELECTION OF YOUNG ASIAN AROWANAS PART2

SELECTION OF YOUNG ASIAN AROWANAS
Shape, Posture and Other Defects

Shape

In terms of shape-wise, Asian arowanas are fairly similar with hardly much differences when they are young. According to individual breeders, the different arowana types may have some differentiations in shape within each farm. But when in comes to an overall breeders' comparison amongst the types, shape uniqueness of each type disappears. Special selling point of a type, eg. spoonhead of a first grade red, can be found in other types of arowana, eg. green arowana. Perhaps it will be better to concentrate on the 'ideal' shape of a young arowana, subjectively, in terms of individual & global preferences. This discussion is based only on local context.

1. Head

Head shapes will range anything from those relatively small sized, pointed heads to larger, more rounded heads. Some may prefer the so called 'spoonhead' or 'mousehead' (that is pointed small head that arches creating a small 'hunch' from the body) over the 'bullethead' (larger, rounded head).

a. Barbels

The barbels should be long & straight; producing a 'V' shape at the joints with the mouth. The barbels can also be aligned parallel instead of 'V' to each other. Avoid those barbels that crossed each other as that spoils the overall appearance. Parallel barbels are also more likely to 'cross' later on.

b. Mouth

The mouth shape can also be pointed or rounded. Ideally, the upper & lower jaws should be able to close tightly so that there is no gap in between. Some young arowanas have a slightly longer lower jaws (aka, protruding lower jaws) which makes the overall appearance more unsightly.

c. Eyes

Although the shape of the eyes are roughly the same, it is more of the relative 'size' & 'positioning' one must take note. Young arowanas with relatively large eyes &/or droopy eyes (one or both eye-balls continuously looking downwards) are not so 'ideal'.

2. Body

Here the preference is for those with broader & shorter body. Those with top portion of bodyline forming a slight arch from the head portion indicate the fish being well fed. Scale alignment must be neat & tidy. 'Yi Tiao Long' (the top most scale level is arranged in a perfect linear & unbroken line) is desirable, & some people are willing to pay more for them as they are rare.

3. Finnage

Finnage should be long & broad, especially the pectoral fins as they give the arowana a grand 'look'. Choose big caudal fins where possible. Caudal fins may be fan-shaped, peach-shaped or diamond-shaped. Ensure that the hard rays of the fins are not crooked.

1st grade Red

Posture

1. Finnage

Lookout for those finnage that is perpetually spread wide in display while swimming. This makes the arowana proud & arrogant.

2. Swmming Posture

The fish should swim smoothly with grace &, at the same time, fearless & arrogant. Swimming should be parallel to & near the water surface. Swimming style should not be tilted sideways too.

3. Aggression

Arowana must be able to show its natural predatory nature. it should be constantly on the prowl, & show aggressiveness. In a batch of young arowanas, the 'king' is preferred, provided it is not deformed.

2. Health

It is as important to choose a quality pet as it is to getting a healthy one. Often, due to neglect in upkeeping the water conditions or feeding of live feeders, young arowanas may occassionally be infected prior to sale. External infections are easier to spot. Signs of internal infections include:

a. sunken abdomen

b. white, stringy & transparent excretion

c. protruding anus

d. fish listless & stressed.

Get someone experienced to help you in your purchase. Also, buy from the seller that you trust. Always ask about the condition of that piece you intend to purchase if you find something amiss. Of course, if there's nothing really wrong, er... don't fault pick TOO much. Good Luck!
